The first U14 boys match of the season was a goal bonanza for Aldershot & Farnham. For many of the boys who were newly into the U14 age group, this was nonetheless their second season playing U14 hockey (as most played up from U12s last year) and their greater experience showed against a new U14 Woking side, many of whom were new to 11-aside hockey. Charlie Dews scored the first goal in the first ten minutes, which settled any incipient nerves, followed relatively shortly thereafter by a great goal by Charlie Odell from a well-timed and well-aimed pass from Adrian. A third followed from Aiden in a piece of what most observers agreed was beautiful hockey. 3-0 up. Yet, despite the score line and the boys' individual display of stunning stick skills, there was still, as coach Matt put it in his half time talk, not much team hockey on display. Woking started the second half with renewed energy and determination and soon scored a goal giving the visitors some hope at 3-1. However, the boys had taken Matt's words to heart and began to play much better team hockey, passing and moving the ball around. One such piece of linking hockey led to the fourth goal. It began with a pass from Charlie O who had dropped to a deep mid position up to Adrian on the left then a lovely ball through to Charlie Dews who comfortably put it away. 4-1. There was some lovely play on show by the young Woking team who were defending valiantly. The Woking goalkeeper made numerous stunning saves keeping the match alive but soon their tired legs began to show and the fifth goal came from a short corner strike from top D by Charlie Odell, which struck the defender's shin pad and bounced into goal. The sixth and final goal came from a lovely pick up from Lewis who was having a blinding game in defence and who sent a great ball to Charlie O at deep mid who sent it through to Nathan who ran the ball into the goal past the keeper to make the score 6-1. A great start to the season!
