Umpiring

Umpiring @ Aldershot & Farnham Hockey Club

Like most clubs in England we rely on club umpires for approximately 80% of our matches. We have a core group of umpires within the club, but we’re always looking for people to join and share the load of games each weekend.

Whether you’re a player, coach, or parent, umpiring is a great way to enjoy the sport we all love in a different way, and see a different perspective to the game.

Juniors are also welcome to take part in umpiring, the England Hockey Level 1 course has a minimum age requirement of 14, and there are excellent junior umpiring programmes provided by the Officiating Committees in the South East Area, that provide mentoring and support by young umpires that have gone through the programme themselves.

Within AFHC we have a thriving junior hockey section, and this is a great place to start your umpiring journey as well

How do I get into umpiring?

The first thing to do is take the rules test which is a required precursor to the level one course. Register at the Hockey Hub here then complete the test.

Currently Level 1 courses are being done online, and there are a number of courses available via the hockey hub which you can sign up for at your own convenience.

The Hockey Hub also provides a wealth of videos, and training on improving your umpiring, giving you the confidence to go out on the field.

When you’re ready to get out on the field, either at training or on one of the weekend matches, please reach out to the club umpire liaison who will arrange a suitable game for you.

Benefits of being a club umpire at AFHC

●Level 1 Course reimbursed once you’ve qualified
●Paid umpire appointments
●Opportunities for coaching/development

England Hockey have recently created an England Hockey Officiating Club which all umpires must join, and brings the whole umpiring community together into one club across the country. If you would like to progress, support is available in the South East Area to work on and develop your umpiring while doing neutral appointments.
